With her manufacturing job gone, Karren Firisch turns to social work for a new future April 28, 2009 - Four years ago Karren Firisch faced a future that was anything but certain. Karren had worked 13 years at a manufacturing job earning $22 a hour, but was laid off in March of 2005. Instead of giving up, she resolved to find a new career and in a few weeks will receive her BSW degree and couldn't be happier. Click here for complete story.

Centennial Celebration Committee picks a slogan and is looking for a logo and ideas March 19, 2009 - The School of Social Work Centennial Celebration Committee needs a logo to go along with its new slogan, A Century of Hope and Change and the School's alumni office will award a $50 gift certificate to the winner. Feb. 18, 2009 – Chanting “Two, four, six, eight, social workers advocate,” hundreds of social work students from across Indiana descended on the State House Wednesday. Students, including a large number of social work students from the Indiana University East campus, were in Indianapolis to attend the 10th annual Social Workers Legislative Education and Advocacy Day (Lead). IUE's social work students organize suicide awareness walk in Richmond Nov. 18, 2008 - Social work students at Indiana University East in Richmond were so moved by the issue of suicide, they organized that city’s “Out of the Darkness Community Walk.” The walk in Richmond was designed to help lessen the stigma that often accompanies suicide. An estimated 32,000 lives are lost annually to suicide in the Untied States. Click here for complete story. |

Dr. William Barton receives national award for juvenile detetion reform efforts
Sept. 24, 2008 - Indiana University School of Social Work Professor William Barton was given a national award Wednesday for his outstanding contributions to juvenile detention reform. The award was presented at the Juvenile Detention Alternative Initiative National Inter-Site Conference at the Marriott Hotel in Indianapolis. Click here for complete story. |

Government report shows employment prospects for for social workers is favorable through 2016 Aug. 4, 2008 - Employment for social workers is expected to grow much faster than the average for all occupations through 2016, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The number of employed social workers is expected to increase from 595,000 in 2006 to 727,000 by 2016, the bureau's Occupational Outlook Handbook predicts.
The growing elderly population and the aging baby boom generation will result in rapid job growth among gerontology social workers, while mental health and substance abuse social workers will grow at a fast rate as well as more people are being placed into treatment programs instead of being sentenced to prison.

Virginia Majewski will join School of Social Work as Associate Dean July 23, 2008 - Indiana University School of Social Work Dean Michael Patchner has announced Dr. Virginia Majewski will become the Associate Dean of the School this academic year. Dr. Majewski has been at West Virginia University where she served as Chairperson of the Division of Social Work for the past six years. In her new duties as Associate Dean, Dr. Majewski will provide oversight and administrative support to the School’s BSW, MSW, and Ph.D. programs in social work and the AS and BS programs in Labor Studies. April 23, 2008 -- Anita Williams, a BSW student on the IU East campus at Richmond has received the Outstanding Academic Achievement Award, while Denise Weiss, also a BSW student, has received the Chancellor's Scholard Award. Williams, who works at the Area Nine office, an organization that deals with elderly and disabled, has been accepted into the IU School of Social Work's Master's program. Weiss works at Wernle Children's Home in Richmond. |

Web site assists borrowers with student loan debt questions The National Consumer Law Center (NCLC) and the Project on Student Debt have developed the Student Loan Borrower Assistance Project that can help loan saddled social workers and other borrowers to find out more information about the recently passed College Cost Reduction and Access Act, among other student loan related issues. |

Indiana University East School of Social Work 2005 Graduates
The Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) degree program is part of the Indiana University School of Social work. The program is accredited by the council on Social Work Education. The BSW degree prepares students for generalist social work practice in such varied settings as Child Welfare, Corrections, Mental Health, Aged, Rehabilitation, Industry, Assistance, and many others.
Associates in Human Services: The Human Services program offers an Associates degree in Human Services and two certificate programs.
Alcohol/Drug Certificates:There is a five and a seven course certificate program available in Addictions.
Gerontology Certificates:We also offer a four and a seven course certificate program in Gerontology.
